Let The Games Begin!
The crowd roars with excitement. The wind rushes through your hair as you finally cross the finish line, and you won! Athletes from all over Greece and from Greek colonies in Africa, Italy, and Asia Minor come to participate in the games. Men drop everything they are doing (including wars) to compete in this spectacular event. The Olympic Games! The first games were held around 776 B.C. in a large field in Olympia.
The Olympics consisted of many games. Some of these games included wrestling, boxing, Pentatholon, and the most exiting game, chariot racing. Greeks first started this event to honor the god of the sky, Zeus. Women were not allowed to participate, only men could. The games happened every four years, kind of like it does in present time. Unlike now, ancient Greece only had the Summer Olympics. Winners of the games were given an olive leaf crown and were very important. The official award ceremony would take place on the last day of the Games at the temple of Zeus.
The Olympic Games are super important. Billions of people watch all of the athletes compete to win the gold medal. Today, in honor of the ancient Greeks inventing the Olympics, the Greeks march out first during the Olympic opening ceremony. I myself do not think many people who watch the Olympics think about how ancient Greece started all of it. Greece does not get enough credit for these games, even though they march out first.
